Excerpt
Excerpt from Salt: A Story
WHEN I CRY OVER you, I give up the two most precious chemicals in my body: water and salt. Tears are not as salty as the ocean. They are less salty than sweat.
Salt is created when a metal reacts with a non-metal. Your heart, my heart.
I have sweated over you, but that was different. That was joyous exhilaration. That was muscles straining, heart singing. I sweated for pleasure. Do you remember that trip to Mexico we made love so often that the margaritas never seemed salty enough?
Do you remember the night we put too many rose-scented salts in the bath? The day we mistook salt for sugar in the apple pie? The months when tears seemed impossible and the sun was always shining?
Long ago, Salt was more precious than diamonds. When I cry over you my tears are diamonds for you. But you are drowning in the gem of a new love. I hate her because she’s with you. No, I can’t be big about it.
