Karin Kallmaker takes her two main characters on side trips galore, each one believable, each a variation of the theme of noble self-sacrifice. On the way, we meet parents and friends and colleagues, all dealing with the life thang in unpredictable ways. Kallmaker’s writing gets better and better, her observations on the life lesbian more and more astute. Painted Moon is a very good romance novel with lots of extras. – Deborah Peifer
